I'm sure you already know, but November is National Novel Writing Month. To participate, you don't need to go to a parade or attend cultural events. No. You participate in National Novel Writing Month by sitting down and writing a novel. The goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days, starting midnight November 1st and ending 11:59 PM on November 30.
50,000 words sounds like a lot, and I guess it is, but it's actually shorter than most novels and totally doable. To put it in perspective, all of my e-fed wrestling promos from the past year and half equal to more than 50,000. And that's not counting 10-15 promos that I didn't save onto my computer for some reason, any promo where I collaborated with someone and tv segments or matches that I wrote. So, it's a bit to squeeze into a month, but don't think you're not capable of pumping out that many words because you can and probably already have!
You might feel anxious about not having a good idea but always remember every story is worth telling. Even if your novel will never be looked upon by someone else's eyes (in your lifetime), it's the fact that it exists, something you took to the time to make, something of length from you, that makes it all worth it. If you fancy yourself a writer (and I imagine most of you do), this is a great time to try something new and exciting. Maybe you'll love it, maybe you'll actually write something that can be turned into a working manuscript. Maybe you won't like it, but you tried at least and found out for yourself. Don't write your dream novel "one day," write it now. Why the hell not?
You can sign up at www.nanowrimo.org/ and let the craziness begin November 1st. You've got about two weeks to prewrite (which is what I'm doing at the moment).
