The scene opens with Chris Angel seated on a chair sifting through a pile of old photos from his days in the WWA and GwX. Holding one up, it showed Jack Clinton, Jonny Nash and himself standing in the ring after emerging victorious against Steven Adams and his Syndicate. Smiling to himself, Angel faced the camera.
“If there was one thing people take for granted it is the will of the human spirit. Throughout our lives we meet people, some that stay, most don’t. And for those that do, there are the few that you either form strong friendships with or grudges against. This photo symbolizes both of those extreme variables. You see, when I was first stepped through the doors of the WWA, a fledgling show with a host of talent but no foreseeable advertising, I didn’t know what to expect. They shoved all of us into a number one contender’s match that took place every week for a month. I went in, untried but willing, with no clear idea of just what it was I was doing. But somehow, against all odds, I made it through. I beat established veterans and rookies alike and rose so quickly through the ranks that I caught the eye of the other rising star, Jonny Nash. He and I began with begrudging respect for one another and we began to have a little competition each week. Who could defeat their opponent the quickest. It was friendly sport but when we were finally pitted against one another for the WWA World Heavyweight Title, that friendly competition erupted into all out war. We beat each other, we tossed one and another off top ropes, we smashed our skulls in with anything we could find.
By the time the night was through, we were broken, bloody and exhausted. It was poignant too that night, because it reminded me that no matter how fast I rise and how glorious it was to stand in the limelight that I was still only human and prone to failure.
Nash beat me that night to be crowned the first WWA World Champion and I tasted my first bitter and most important defeat of my young career. But I didn’t let up. I kept at it and we fought more until finally at Clash of the Champions, the WWA’s biggest PPV event, I beat Nash to become the top dog in the company. I held that title for a long time. Nash fought me for it and he lost. There were others too and all of them, I put down. I was unstoppable.
But funny things happened along the way. I eventually lost the title in a great conspiracy to Morgan Blackwell, the man Steven Adams was backing and Nash and Clinton on their own were being harassed by the Syndicate. It was strange then that a common enemy would bring us three together. We could stare at each other in the eye, our distrust and hostility evident but we were united against a single threat.
We became the Gods of War and we laid siege to the Syndicate and fought them at every turn.
This photo symbolizes everything we had fought for and won. We were individuals, standing against each other but like I said, the human spirit is strong, our will to fight is strong and we found out that together, we were formidable. Because no man is an island and together, we were a force not to be reckoned with,”
Setting the photograph down, Angel continued.
“Which brings me to the moment now. A while ago a choice was to be made. It was either Clinton or myself who’d face Matthews for the Texas Title. It was a pick your poison match in some ways. He wanted to punish us for ruining his wedding but Codi, god bless her soul decided to give it a little flavor. Still, pitting two long time friends against each other where their prize is the opportunity for the SNW Texas Title would probably have Vinnie grinning all the way to the bank. He knows just as well as I do that nothing is more important than family. Having people you can trust at your back is key to any successful ventures and by pitting us against one another, he might have a gulf the size of the Mediterranean.
I can’t lie and I say this decision sits well with me. When it was us facing one another with no strings attached, I can see how we could have fun with that. But with the stakes upped, with the future of our careers hanging in the balance, it…well, makes for interesting TV at least. I’m sure the fans will love this one, even if I do not.
Maybe I need to be the big man here and lay down. Afterall, it has been Clinton all these months fighting for the top spot and he has been getting screwed out of it yet again by Vincent and his cronies. His time to shine is imminent and it would be cruel to wrest it from under him.
Yeah, maybe that’s what I got to do. Stand the moral ground and let my friend take the win,”
Angel looks down again and sifting through more photos, pulls another up. This was an important photograph and it showed him holding the WWA World Heavyweight Title for the first time at Clash of the Champions. His brow was furrowed and he looked pensive, as if the gravity of the decision was weighing down on him.
“When I lost that belt, I was never given an opportunity to fight for it, even when I rightfully won matches to secure a chance. Adams made damn sure of that. This…has been a long time coming. No, I can’t be selfish. I’m already Bad Blood Champion.
But then again, having two championships and being the first to have two championships would be a step in the right direction. Can you guys imagine that? Chris Angel, SNW Texas Champion and Bad Blood Champion. How cool is that? I’ve beaten everyone who vied for my Bad Blood title and I’ve proven myself capable. I mean, Clinton’s had his chance right? I’m sorry he kept getting screwed out of the matches but when you’re given an opportunity like this, is it selfish to want it? Besides, I’m sure Clinton wouldn’t want an easy victory. He’d want to work for it and so would I. These photographs prove that I work hard and this title I have proves that I am a rising star.
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Chris Angel as SNW Texas Champion sounds great and it is high time someone put Vincent in his place. No offence Jack old buddy but the punk knows you well, he’ll be prepared. But I’m a wild card. Right now, I have the advantage and this might just work. We’ll have our wish, the titles will come home to us, it’ll just come home on one person.
Me.
Yes, that’s what’s going to happen. We’ll fight Jack, you and me. Like the old times. And I know you’ll give it good. I just want you to know, before I bloody you up that this isn’t personal. I will still have your back and if you beat me, I will support you.
But I will not back down. I will give it everything I’ve got because right now, there is only one thing I want.
And that is to become the SNW Texas Champion.
No one will stand in my way, not even you,”
