Because some idiot was just so damn curious that they had to ask themselves "Dur, what does this button do?!" In short, there's been a big outage with AT&T here in DFW, making internet intermittent. If they don't get their act together fast, I may have to threaten to switch providers and see how long it takes for them to pull their heads out of their asses then.

i saw a recent problem with CableOne, recently. they provide cable (obviously), internet & phone service (using their cable system). during the process of "upgrading" their equipment to offer faster speeds, they ended up screwing up the internet & phone service for 6,500 customers in the area. my internet went down for something like a day and a half. started with a half day, got it back for a few hours, then lost it for a full 24 hours after that.
only reason they wanted to upgrade their internet speeds was because a competitor (MidContinent) was expanding quite a bit into the metro area. since MidContinent's slowest speed was considerably faster then CableOne's fastest speed, they didn't want to risk their customers leaving en mass.
believe me, Matt, i can sympathise with your situation.
